EFFECTIVE, PERSUASIVE BRIEF WRITING IN THE STATE AND FEDERAL COURTS OF APPEALS
The Appellate Practice Section of the Oregon State Bar and the Oregon Chapter of the Federal Bar Association proudly announce WINNING YOUR APPEAL: THE BRIEF MATTERS  , Wednesday, May 26, 2010, a half-day CLE focusing on effective brief writing in the Oregon Court of Appeals and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
We have assembled a panel of judges and practitioners to break down the elements of a brief in state and federal court.  Our panel includes: Hon. Susan P. Graber, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; Hon. David V. Brewer, Chief Judge of the Oregon Court of Appeals; Kelly Zusman, Senior Litigation Counsel and Appellate Coordinator for the United States Attorney for the District of Oregon; Harry Auerbach, Chief Deputy City Attorney for the City of Portland; and Julene Quinn, appellate counsel for SAIF Corporation.  Our tentative schedule:
1:00 p.m. – Introduction and Opening Remarks from the Panel.
2:00 p.m. –   The Required Preliminaries:  Why Are they There? What are the Judges Looking For?
3:00 p.m. – The Statement of Facts—Telling Your Story Persuasively, Without Arguing.
4:00 p.m. – The Argument—Tying it All Together and Bringing it Home.
